Tips to Save Money on Laundry Day

Tips to Save Money on Laundry Day

Laundry day can cost you a small fortune. It adds up quickly from laundry detergent, fabric softener, bleach, electricity and water; all this, just to clean your clothes.

Saving Money on Laundry Costs

  1. Use dryer balls. I’m sure you’ve heard of dryer balls. It seems everyone is using them and for good reason. For the $20 or so for a set of dryer balls you can save a nice chunk of cash over the course of a year. For me, the average cost for a box of dryer sheets was about $7. I went through about a box every other month with a total savings of $42 over the course of a year. The cost savings really ads up and the dryer balls reduce static on your clothes just as well as the dryer sheets.
  2. Go detergent free. I for one, wouldn’t mind skipping the mess of laundry soap. I’m not a messy person but for some reason my laundry room floor always has at least some detergent on it. I’ve opted to try these laundry magnets. So far I’ve found that they are working to clean my clothes just as well as detergent without the cost or the mess. Granted, I still use a touch of bleach to keep my whites white but the over-all savings is fantastic. I was easily spending close to $15 every month on laundry detergent and over the last several months I have saved close to $150.
  3. Skip the rinse cycle. When I chose to go detergent free by using the laundry magnets, I learned that I can skip the rinse cycle on my washing machine. Adding even more savings every month. Because I’m not using chemical based laundry detergent, I no longer need to rinse out the chemicals, saving me both water and electricity costs.

Total Laundry Cost Savings

If you have more than one person in your household, your cost savings will be much more. But for now, it’s just me in my home and the total savings listed below will reflect that.

  1. Using dryer balls in place of dryer sheets
monthly savings: $3.50, yearly savings: $42.
  2. Laundry magnets in place of laundry detergent

  3. Water cost savings
monthly savings: $4, yearly savings: $48.
  4. Electricity savings
monthly savings: $12.50, yearly savings: $150.

Total Savings: $420 a year.

I have a family of four and do alot of laundry. I decided to try the magnets and the dryer balls and I save about $37 a month just on detergent and dryer sheets. I have been using them for about four months, so that is a total savings of $148. Pretty neat.
